Dua for visiting graves and dua for entering in graveyard.

   1. Dua for visiting graves:

In the hadith of Tirmidhi Sharif, it is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, that when the Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, passed through the graveyard of Medina, he turned towards the graves and said:

”السَّلَامُ عَلَيْکُمْ يَا أَهْلَ الْقُبُورِ يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لَنَا وَلَکُمْ أَنْتُمْ سَلَفُنَا وَنَحْنُ بِالْأَثَرِ”۔

(Translation) O people of the grave, peace be upon you! May Allah forgive us and you, you have arrived before us and we are also going to come after you.

    2. Dua when visiting grave:

In addition to this, you can recite this dua:

         السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ دَارَ قَوْمٍ مُؤْمِنِينَ، وَإِنَّا إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ بِكُمْ لَاحِقُونَ۔

Translation: O faithful family! Peace be upon you and we will join you, God willing.

   3. Dua for entering graveyard:

Visiting the graveyard is a shari’a act to gain lessons and remember the Hereafter, but the condition is that while visiting the graves, one should not say such words that would cause the displeasure of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, for example: Except Allah Ta’ala. Asking and calling upon the one buried in the grave, asking for his help, or reciting qasidas in his praise, and declaring him to be truly heavenly, etc.

There are two purposes of visiting graves:

1- The pilgrim thinks for his benefit by remembering death and the deceased, and remembers that the abode of these deceased is either heaven or hell, this is the first and main purpose of visiting graves.

2- The deceased is benefited by the pilgrim’s greetings, good wishes and supplications for the deceased, and this benefit is only for the Muslim deceased, and one of the dua for going to the graveyard is this:

   4. Dua for entering graveyard in Arabic:

“اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ الدِّيَارِ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ وَالْمُسْلِمِيْنَ، وَإِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ بِكُمْ لَاحِقُوْنَ، أَسْأَلُ اللهَ لَنَا وَلَكُمُ الْعَافِيَةَ”

Peace be upon you, O believers and Muslim residents of the houses, and God willing, we are also going to meet you.

   5. Dua for visiting parents grave and other relatives:

It is also permissible to raise one’s hands while praying in the graveyard, the evidence for this is the following hadith of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her):

 She states that:

“One night when the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out, I sent Barirah (may Allah be pleased with him) after him to see where the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had gone. She said:

“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went to the graveyard of Baqi’ and stood in Baqi’ and raised his hands.

  She asked:

O Messenger of Allah, where did you go last night?

Then the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said (I was sent to pray for the relatives and other people of Al-Baqi).

However, while praying, one should not face the graves, but should face the Qibla while praying, because the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade praying facing the graves, and supplication is the brain and pulp of prayer, as It is known that, therefore, the order of dua will be the same as prayer, and then the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: (Prayer is worship). Then the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) recited this verse:

      وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ادْعُوْنِيْ أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ

Translation: And your Lord says, call upon Me and I will answer your supplication.

   Etiquette of graveyard:

And do not walk between the graves of Muslims with shoes on; Because Uqbah bin Aamir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: (I love walking on coals or a sword, or tying my shoe with my foot) than walking on a Muslim’s grave, and the graves (The need to be spent in the middle is like the need to be spent in the market.)

Sunan Ibn Majah Hadith No. (1567).

We pray to Allah, the Exalted and Mighty, to shower His blessings on us and all the Muslims who pass away from this world.
